On May 9th, 1980 the Sunshine Skyway bridge (built in 1969)collapsed when The SS Summit Venture a freighter over 19,000 tons crashed into the bridge. Causing a collapse and 35 people died in tragedy. The ship apparently lost it’s radar in a tropical storm. Wesley MacIntire was the sole survivor. He somehow survived after landing on the ships deck and rolling into the bay. There doesn’t seem to be a memorial for those who died. In 1993 the bridge was demolished after the new skyway bridge was built. The fishing piers are the only thing left standing.
